Operating principle

Lipo

Lithium-ion polymer batteries, commonly lithium polymer batteries (abbreviated Li-poly, LiPo) are rechargeable batteries. LiPo batteries are usually composed of several identical secondary cells in parallel to increase the discharge current capability, and are often available in series “packs” to increase the total available voltage.

Your new pack arrives half charged. Charge your pack fully before first use. You must use a balance charging system. Otherwise, you risk your pack becoming severely out of balance over time, which will significantly decrease the lifespan.

Eg : If charging a 4000mah LiPo pack at 1C (like most of common LiPo), you would be charging it at 4 Amps.

The most usefull number you need to keep in mind is 1,141, this number help you to calculate maximum and minimum voltage on charging & discharging.

Battery Type Max Charging Voltage (V) Max Discharging Voltage (V)
2S (2x 3.7V) 7.4 x 1.141 = 8.44 7.4 / 1.141 = 6.5
3S (3x 3.7V) 11.1 x 1.141 = 12.6 11.1 / 1.141 = 9.7
4S (4x 3.7V) 14.8 x 1.141 = 16.9 14.8 / 1.141 = 12.9

Set your speed control to hard cut-off at 3.2V/cell or higher-3.4V per cell is best. If your ESC does not have this feature, you will need an external cutoff or alarm.

The rotor part of a brushless motor is often a permanent magnet synchronous motor, but can also be a switched reluctance motor, or induction motor.

Brushless motors are a popular motor choice for model aircraft including helicopters. Their favorable power-to-weight ratios and large range of available sizes, from under 5 gram to large motors rated at well into the kilowatt output range, have revolutionized the market for electric-powered model flight, displacing virtually all brushed electric motors. The large power-to-weight ratio of modern batteries and brushless motors allows models to ascend vertically, rather than climb gradually. The low noise and lack of mess compared to small glow fuel internal combustion engines is another reason for their popularity.

Check the max current output of your brushless motor, particularly when you have powerfull motor, with this information you will be able to choose the right ESCs, battery, and your distribution board if you want one.

ESC (Electronic Speed Control)

An electronic speed control or ESC is an electronic circuit with the purpose to vary an electric motor's speed, its direction and possibly also to act as a dynamic brake. ESCs are often used on electrically powered radio controlled models, with the variety most often used for brushless motors essentially providing an electronically-generated three phase electric power low voltage source of energy for the motor.

You can be able to setup an ESC by pluging the control part into the receiver's throttle control channel. To configure it, you will hear several sounds which identify the menu in which one you are. By moving the throttle command you will define the value for the menu.
